You run a business in your region, you do good work, but competitors appear above you in Google. So you look for an SEO agency. The trouble is that every agency promises more visitors, and from the outside they all look alike. This article explains which local SEO agency really helps a small business, what to look for when choosing one and which promises you are better off ignoring.

Short answer: the best local SEO agency for a small business is not the biggest or the cheapest. It is the agency that understands your area and customers, works on your Google Business Profile and your website together, is honest about timescales, follows Google’s rules and leaves you the owner of all accounts and data. An agency that guarantees first place is out straight away.

Choosing a local SEO agency for a small business: what a good SEO agency does and does not do

1. First understand what drives local visibility

A good SEO agency can explain this in plain language. Google names three main factors for local results:

  • Relevance: how well your business profile and website match what someone is searching for.
  • Distance: how far your business is from the person searching.
  • Prominence: how well known your business is, based partly on reviews and the number of websites linking to you.

Google adds that you cannot request or pay for a better local ranking. An agency cannot change distance. It can improve relevance and prominence, with complete business information, clear pages per service and genuine reviews. Read how to get that foundation right yourself in our practical plan for local SEO.

2. A good local SEO agency starts with questions

Google recommends interviewing an SEO provider before you hire them. A good provider also asks you questions: what makes your business unique, who are your competitors and how do customers find you now? Ask these questions yourself, which Google also lists:

  • Can you show examples of previous work?
  • Do you follow Google’s guidelines (Google Search Essentials)?
  • What results do you expect, in what timeframe, and how do you measure them?
  • What is your experience in my industry and in my region?

For a local business, that last question matters. An agency that knows your region knows which places belong to your service area and how customers there search.

3. Watch what an SEO agency does not do

Local SEO has quick tricks that go against Google’s rules. A reliable agency does not use them:

  • No fake locations. A virtual office or rented mailing address is not allowed as a location in your Google Business Profile. If you serve customers at their location, you set a service area instead.
  • No keywords in your business name. Your profile name must be your real business name. According to Google, adding unnecessary words can lead to your profile being suspended.
  • No pages that only swap a place name. Google calls pages created mainly to rank for similar searches doorway abuse.
  • No bought links or reviews. Links mainly intended to manipulate rankings are link spam, and Google removes reviews given in exchange for a reward.

An agency using these tricks may boost your visibility in the short term, but it puts your business profile and website at risk.

4. Honest about guarantees and timescales

Google is clear about this: nobody can guarantee first place. If an agency does guarantee it, Google advises you to find someone else. On timing, Google says some changes show within a few hours and others only after several months. You usually wait a few weeks before judging whether a change had an effect. So a good SEO agency does not promise a fixed position, but does agree what will be done, when you get a report and how you will assess together whether it works.

5. You remain the owner of your profile, data and accounts

Your Google Business Profile, Google Search Console and Google Analytics belong to your business, not to the agency. Give the agency access as a user, but stay the owner yourself. Google advises giving only read access to Search Console for a first SEO audit, not write access. Also agree which data you receive if you stop working together. Read more about ownership and agreements in how to spot a reliable web designer.

6. SEO works better when website and visibility go together

An SEO agency that only sends reports, but cannot or may not change your website, soon gets stuck. Local visibility needs clear pages per service, a good mobile display, fast loading and an easy route to contact. So choose a partner that can handle website and SEO together, or make sure your web builder and SEO agency work well together. Read why that matters in SEO and web design.

7. Being found in ChatGPT and AI answers

More and more people ask ChatGPT their question or see an AI overview in Google. The basics matter there too. Google says the same foundational SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode as to regular search results. No special optimisation is required, but a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google with a snippet.

Something similar applies to ChatGPT. OpenAI uses the OAI-SearchBot crawler to show websites in ChatGPT’s search results. If your robots.txt blocks that crawler, your site will not appear in ChatGPT’s search answers. For local questions, ChatGPT may use an approximate location based on the IP address. OpenAI also states that placement in the results is not guaranteed. Does an agency promise to ‘get you into ChatGPT’? Ask exactly how, and be as critical as you would be of a Google guarantee.

8. SEO or advertising?

Advertising with Google has no effect on your position in the free search results. Google does not accept money to rank websites higher there either. Adverts deliver visibility immediately for as long as you pay. SEO builds visibility that lasts. For many local businesses, a combination works: adverts for quick enquiries and SEO for the long term. Checklist: 8 questions for an SEO agency

  • What do you already know about my region and how my customers search?
  • Will you work on my Google Business Profile and my website together?
  • What results do you expect, in what timeframe, and how do you measure them?
  • Do you follow Google’s guidelines, including those for business profiles and reviews?
  • Which examples of previous work can you show?
  • Do I remain the owner of my profile, Search Console and Analytics?
  • How often do you report, and what is in a report?
  • How will you make sure my website can be found in AI answers?

Going further: measure enquiries, not just rankings

A higher position is nice, but the goal is more suitable customers. So agree that the agency also looks at phone calls, forms and quote requests. Search Console shows which searches you appear for and how often people click. Google Analytics shows what visitors do next. Read how to set that up in improve your website with GA4.

Frequently asked questions about choosing a local SEO agency

Does an SEO agency need to be from my own region?

Not necessarily, but it helps. An agency that knows your region better understands which places belong to your service area and can visit more easily. More important is that the agency has experience with local businesses and follows Google’s rules.

How long does it take for SEO to work?

There is no fixed timescale. According to Google, some changes show within hours and others only after months. A good agency explains what is achievable in your situation, with your competition and your website.

Can I do local SEO myself?

Partly, yes. Filling in your Google Business Profile, asking for reviews and keeping your opening hours up to date are things you can do yourself. An agency mainly helps with the website: structure, technology, copy and measurement. Start, for example, with our practical plan for local SEO.

What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?

Local SEO focuses on searches with a place name or ‘near me’, such as the map results with business profiles. Regular SEO is about your website’s visibility in general. A local small business needs both: a strong business profile and a website that clearly explains what you do. Wondering what a new website costs? Read how much a website costs in the Netherlands.
